Affiliate marketing can be your springboard to entering the world of online business. It is quite often considered to be the easiest way to begin your journey for several reasons.
- you do not need a product or service of your own
- you are not limited to promoting one company or product
- most affiliate programs are free or have a small fee to allow promotion of their products or services
- many companies have their own training programs for their affiliates
- the tools needed to start your online business are relatively inexpensive to start with
B) for the company or new business visionary
- relatively inexpensive way to increase your market size by increasing the number of individuals promoting your product
- if you are a relatively new company there are several companies out there that will provide services to help you create that affiliate program
- like the affiliates you seek, you have many affordable tools that are available to you to promote your platform and affiliate program
However, before you start your journey, understand this. As simple as it sounds there are still many steps you need to grasp as a new online entrepreneur. And, if you are new to the business world there are many business aptitudes that if you do not have or understand you will most definitely need to acquire and learn.
There are many reasons for failure but I believe the primary one is that many individuals who fail do so because they either fail to understand the most basic of a sound business model or they fail to implement these basics.
Most people believe finding your niche should be your first step but let’s start one step before this. Why are you even contemplating an online business? You see your why is going to determine just how far you are willing to go on your journey. In an earlier article, I discussed this idea in more detail. So before choosing your niche market get your why front and center.
Your Why: what are you looking for? As you begin your affiliate marketing business, will you stay focused when things seem not to go as planned? Can you honestly say when you succeed that you will feel satisfied, happy, euphoric even? Will your business not only live up to whatever you are passionate about but lift you higher than you ever imagined?
You see that is what drives the successful business owner. It is not a matter of simply having the mindset to keep going but to be able to create the steps needed to get there along. Tie that in with an ability to take the odd detour if necessary and your journey will be a success.
After your why, yes, it is time to determine your niche market. In most cases, affiliate marketing is not your end game but your starting game. With that in mind, your niche as an affiliate need not be what you see yourself promoting or involved in for the rest of your life but rather that stepping stone.
For some of you, it just may be and that is truly okay. You may have already found what you are passionate about and that is all you want to do. However, for many of you, it is simply the first phase of your business plan.
No matter which is true, it is important to understand the process. While one journey may require more steps than the other, the steps are still necessary for either to succeed.
After understanding your Niche, you now must create your working space. You may be working from home, maybe only able to work a few hours a week initially but you still need to follow the guidelines of every business owner, entrepreneur. Set a schedule for yourself, be it after work, after dinner time or family bedtime for those with family responsibilities, or even weekends. You need to commit the time it will take in both the learning phase and the implementing phase.
In the book, The 4-Hour Workweek, author Tim Ferris talks about the possibilities of creating the ideal business world. Technically describing that lifestyle that will give you the best of both worlds: Money and Time. No, it is not just a dream scenario for budding entrepreneurs, however, it also not something you arrive at on your first go around as an online entrepreneur. At least for most of us. It can, however, be your ending goal if that is indeed what you want.
Use your scheduled “work” time to implement your steps that you have determined needed to move forward with your business.
Suggestions: Start by writing your goal on a whiteboard or paper. Work your way backward, mapping out the steps to take to get there. Set up smaller, achievable goals. While trusting your plan to be prepared to modify or adjust if necessary. Keep your goal front and center at all times. Taking each step or climbing each rung of the ladder that ultimately gets you to your end goal should be taken cautiously but with excitement.
- first step. finding your niche
- company name
- web hosting
- funnel building
- landing page building
- social media connection
- chosen autoresponder
There are several things to budget for depending on your affiliate choice:
- any affiliate fees that you may be required to pay either at the beginning or monthly ( noting this occurs usually only for the higher ticketed affiliate programs)
- fees for your autoresponders/hosting/domain names
- ad expense/marketing expense
- coaching / mentoring
- paying other services that may be able to take care of some of your business requirements that you are unable to do, or do not have time for, example hiring a VA (virtual assistant) to post regularly on your social media sites.
- furthering your education: lecture and seminar attendance, books,
- travel expenses
- bookkeeping/ accounting services
- legal .. incorporations
- federal.. tax requirements for your business necessary in the area you reside in
For some of you, this list may seem overwhelming. Yet, I am sure I have missed a few key things, but, I am hoping you are getting my point. Your journey to be a successful entrepreneur/business person is not to be taken lightly. This is the reason I believe so many fail. Not because their affiliate program they have chosen lets them down, but more so because they were unprepared to accept that just because you “work from home” that it is going to be easy. If you have not figured it out let me say this, it is not.
So why would you want to become your own boss?
I can think of many reasons but the most important is not just because the earning potential is virtually unlimited, but because you are the master of your own time. The boss you answer to is YOU. When you perform your necessary tasks is up to YOU. You choose your product or service. You choose your mentor(s). And you determine just how much time you want to spend on your business.
Wouldn’t you love to be able to simply go on a walk when you want to, go to a doctor’s appointment without asking anyone’s permission or coach your child in whatever activity they love simply because you can?
How much do you value your time?
Yes, the list outlining the skills you will need to move your business forward is extensive. It is very time-consuming in fact if you are brand new to the business life. However, with the right teaching or coaching, you can learn the services that you can sub out. Your valuable time can be recouped.
Now the good news: you can start small and work your way up to a full-fledged business. Remember your business plan? Keep it simple at first. Remember small steps.

Take this to heart as your journey begins with what you are willing to learn to make your dreams come true. The next part of your journey begins with your implementation of what you have learned and what you are learning. The online business world is dynamic so you must be as well.
